If someone told me a few years ago that I would be getting a job offer to teach a yoga class to a private school I wouldn’t believe it. But it happened. And I’m thrilled.
When I heard the news that there was an interest in getting a yoga teacher and that someone had talked about me and the school owner actively ask for me to get in touch, I was speechless. So, I immediately made contact and followed Ramit Sethi’s advice to make it easy for VIPs to answer yes or no. I ask if she had time X day of the week for an interview and she said no.
She said she had time the next day.
At first I was happy that I got the time in the VIP agenda… but then I started to freak out, like, how, what, when?
But I breathe and remember what I learned a few days ago from Nicole Walters: SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT!
I’ve been practicing yoga since 2016 so I must know something.
Several people had approach me to ask about a healthy lifestyle, so I must know something.
A bunch of people had paid me to show them what I have learned so they can apply it on their own, so I must know something!
When I remember myself that I already have the knowledge and the practice by my side, I starting to cool down.
But then I remember that my largest class has been attended by THREE people and now I’m applying for a +20people class. I started sweating!
But my mom, somehow, was watching this show where a lady in their 70’s has a dance studio and she told something like “when you’re following a video, you know what comes next, but when you go to a salon, you are expectant of what the teacher is doing because she feels the class and will go to wherever her heart leads her”. So, I stopped worrying.
I presented myself carrying my mat and with a great smile on my face. Look, I wasn’t looking for this. This was an opportunity that was opened for me, if I wasn’t a great fit for the job, at least I was going to enjoy the experience of going to an interview after so long.
After a few minutes talking with the VIP, she told me she was scared about my lack of group management, but I told her instinctively that I could form myself around that. One can keep growing, right? And I love learning, so, this is something I can take out of this experience. She smiled and told me she needed to see me performing to see what she could do.
The plan was to be in front of the children, so I went to the bathroom to take my boots out and breathe deeply to remember myself that I could do it.
I went out when I was about to show them the sun salutation, I heard they said something about the language. I asked them if they needed me to teach and English and they said that was preferable. I started talking in English to show and help them to make the sun salutation. The first serie I learn and my all time favorite to start my mornings.
Even though I forgot a few words and couldn’t 100% translate everything my mind was thinking, I could transmit like 70% of the message and lesson. And they seem to be thrilled and excited for me, that even one of then told me: Miss, you already made me sweat!
I was smiling because of the compliment, but also because I was called Miss for the first time.
It seemed that all the teachers noticed that I knew what I was doing and I wasn’t so lost with the language. Now, we were going to face my final challenge: the classroom.
I remember that, before everybody left the room, I started rolling my mat and ask everyone one little thing: if you see I can’t remember a word, please, help me! They nod.
At the end, the VIP told me to put on my shoes and go to her office, again.
My final challenge has been officially pospone until my very first day of class.
And at the final reunion she told me that as my academic knowledge also backs me up, I can have a future opportunity in Math class, as well.
I must say I’m really happy and nervous and thrilled about all this experience. It seems like God wants me to build my country with my Civil Engineering career but also, He wants me to help to build future citizens and I’m ready to go to whenever He sends me to!
I’m officially a Miss.
