What Works is to do Everything Backwards.

This is also known as Reverse Engineering, the capability to have a goal or a vision and sharpen your skills to pursue just that. To understand and have a list of steps of what needs to be done in order to accomplish the goal you set in the beginning. It seems that the most loving advice you can get in this time and age is to have one sharpened skill that will help you to survive in this world, and then several skills that are general. That is how you reverse engineer your life. So, what will be the one goal and the one skill that you will sharpen for the rest of 2021?

What Works is to do Everything Backwards.

This art or this ability to do everything backwards it’s also known as reverse engineering.

A few years ago, I gave a talk that was named like this but in terms of Blogging. Some of the things that I said in that time, also applies today. And I also believe in some things that I said in that talk about Blogging, but as time goes by, I’ve noticed that this Reverse Engineering thing doesn’t apply to just Blogging.

I want to go some-what more specific but also, in a way, more deep than that because what I have seen is that Reverse Engineering works in a lot of places.

Reverse Engineering is the ability to think about the end result and then, start working towards that end result.

Some people use it like a vision board, other people set goals and create to-do lists, but this (Reverse Engineering) tool helps you to focus, to laser focus on to just one thing that you will actually use and (helps you) to be able to pursue just that.

Taking this Blogging topic apart, I could say to you that this (Reverse Engineering) has helped me a lot in my professional career.

You set a goal and then you go and do everything you can to accomplish that goal.

The Educational plan is actually that you should be a Jake of All Trades, that you have to know a little bit of something but you actually don’t know anything at all. You are just familiar but they are just trying to give you the tools to learn on your own sharpened.

Yoga with friends. Leggings.

I guess that’s ok but, to be honest, to survive in the real world, you need, at least, one sharpened skill. Just one and a bunch of other skills that you may have some kind of knowledge but you are not so great at them, you are just familiar with them… but (what) you really need is one type of sharpened skill to survive.

I think the plan is that you have to be familiar with everything, so you can decide with facts what are you going to do for the rest of your life.

Even though that’s great, and I’m thankful for that opportunity to be able to see a lot of fields inside of my industry, to be honest, it’s a lot to take on.

When in the real world, you just need one thing.

At least in my job is what I’m trying to do, to be able to do my limited functions the best I can. That is the Reverse Engineering that I’m applying into the real world because my current goal is to keep learning inside of my industry with that job, and to be able to maintain that source of income because it’s great for my family.

Having fun with Bugs Bunny at Six Flags Mexico City. Suit.

To be a part of this industry is a great honor and that is why I’m trying to sharpen my skills every day to keep pursuing this career inside of my industry, the industry that I chose.

But, to be honest, the only way that I have found so far to be able to be a part of this industry is to sharpen just one skill, to find that skill, and go and work towards that every day.

Yes, having certain knowledge in all of those fields or areas inside of engineering is also great but, to be honest, is not adding a lot of stuff to my current functions. That is one of the things that I wanted to share with you today.

I started to ask questions, I started to buy the books that I really need to survive, and to sharpen my skills that I need at my job, and to be able to be a part of this industry for a long long time.

It’s not like I’m going to be changing fields inside of my Engineering career like every month. It’s just one skill, one very sharpened skill that you need to accomplish that goal that you set (for yourself) when you were trying to reverse engineer, and then having a bunch of other extra general kind of skills that will help you towards that goal.

Riding a motorbike at Six Flags Mexico City. Jeans / shoes

I didn’t want to just focus on Blogging because most of the time, the advice that one gives you is about the things that have work on this side, but not necessarily will work for you. And I’m not telling you (this) because I want to keep my secrets or stuff, I’m actually telling you this because during all of this years, I’ve seen and I’ve consumed a lot of educators and some of their advice, I tried to follow them and I got nothing from them.

The day that everything started to get serious was when I stopped and I analysed everything that I had around me, and I started to taking actions on the things that were in my hands, in my abilities to keep working towards that.

Once I went inside of everything, I was able to place an order to everything outside and to be able to understand a lot of things. And that is why I don’t want to go specific just about Blogging or just about careers or just about writing a book.

Maybe it’s time for us to stop taking external advice.

Pay attention to what you can do, sharpen that one skill that will help you to survive this world. At the end of the day, you have to be useful to this society, you have to have something that is helpful to build the world you want to live in.

Dancing at the Twitter Mexico City Party.

You have to be a doer. A maker.

You just can’t be in this position to ask that everything is better but ask for it from the commodity of your couch. You have to have something in your hands to be able to build that world you want to live in, or to be able to have the future you want your family to have.

At the end of the day, I’m just sharing all of my observations with the best intention, because believe it or not, I like to come back to this articles and see how far I’ve gone or how I was thinking the days that I was really excited, happy, or the days that I had a really great illusion, or the days that I was starting to take a certain path, or start a certain project.

I like to go back to read those articles and see my (personal) development and see how my ideas (have) changed.

That is the thing that I wanted to share today with you about reverse engineering. I hope that you liked this article and I hope that God allows us to see each other very very soon. Ciao!

What Blogging Teaches You.

Today I’m sharing what blogging teaches you or at least what blogging has taught me in thirteen years of practice! I made a summary with 5 important things that I’ve learn from Blogging that are far from the normal you are used to listen like creativity, patience, resistance, etc. The five learnings that I got from Blogging are very specific and I really think they will encourage you and excite you to write more! I hope you enjoy it.

What Blogging Teaches You.

After thirteen years (of Blogging), I can give you my full experience of what Blogging can actually teach you. And I have this great summary of all of my experiences and I’m going to share with you only 5 points. But remember that there is a lot of normal knowledge of what Blogging teaches you, like patience, resistance, (creativity), etc.

My first photoshoot at El Zonte beach, El Salvador in January of 2009. Skirt / Ring / Earrings / Pendant / Monroe

You have more knowledge than what you think.

One of the things that Blogging teaches you is that you have more knowledge than what you think. And this will be very obvious when you are writing an article and you think that you are developing only one type of idea. But at the end of it, you will see that you actually grab a lot of knowledge from a lot of places that you didn’t even imagined, and that you just have that kind of knowledge there but you didn’t know why did you accumulate it. And when you are writing all of your thoughts and all of your ideas into one article, you will understand how much of a knowledge you actually have.

And the other way you will be able to see that is that when you are writing a one-topic article, you might have this practice of talking about several topics in the same article. So that is one thing —one good thing actually!— to have more knowledge than what you need for one article and you will be capable to see that when you’re writing with more frequency in your blog.

Holding a low lunge in my yoga practice, 2017. Top / Leggings

You can learn anything easy.

Another thing that Blogging teaches you is that you can learn anything easy. When you start to blog, you might think that you would only need to write and publish. And that (situation) might be for your first 10, 12, 20, 100 posts, but after some time, you will have this desire of giving your audience more depth, more material to see… and then, you will start to create more multimedia. For example: more photos, videos, podcast episodes, etc.

The first time that I really really felt that I was capable of learning anything easy in the Blogging industry was in 2008 when I was able to create a link in an image. So, anybody that would click my photo, would be sent to another link (address). I didn’t have a lot of experience with links. So, to me, that day when I was capable of linking an image and using my photo as a button was crazy to me!

Imagine how technology has advanced so much from 2008 that you can do several stuff like that and more. So, yeah, you can learn anything easy.

From my first photoshoot at El Zonte beach, El Salvador. My heart is a roaring sea. Bikini

You have the skills to be in front of a (small) business.

Another thing that Blogging teaches you is that you already have the skills to be in front of a business. So, as I was telling you, you might start by just writing because you want to publish your ideas and that’s totally fine. But when the time goes by, you might develop some desires between you, your capabilities, and your blog. And you will notice that you already have the skills you need to be in front of a business, to turn your hobby blog into a business.

Once you understand that, you will see how easy it is to start some kind of side income and organize all of your ideas and all of your efforts into monetize your hobby.

And you will see how easy it is because you already have all the capabilities and all the skills needed to be in front of a business.

A some-what selfie panoramic of my current apartment at San Salvador. Shirt

You can connect the dots.

Blogging also teaches you that you can connect the dots. And you will connect them in a very logical way. This will happen when you are analyzing your stats. You will see that you will have a lot of information that, at first glance, will be some what complicated. But as you start to pay attention to what your audience is telling you, you actually will connect the dots and will develop your creativity. And the connection with your audience will be more thoughtful.

Because you will start creating with the knowledge that you have and the knowledge that you will get —because you will learn anything easy—. (And) with all of those knowledges, if that word even exist in English, you will start to create more pieces that are specifically created for your own audience.

And you will understand what kind of articles you will need to write to be in more communication with your own audience.

You will understand at what time they want to read you.

You will understand of all of the topics that you were giving to them, what is the topic that they enjoy the most.

That is one of the thing that Blogging really teaches you.

I was so happy to meet a yellow kombi that was traveling from Argentina to Alaska. Top / Jeans / Cellphone

You have the courage to seize an opportunity.

And the last but not least thing that Blogging teaches you is that you have the courage to seize an opportunity. You already have that sense of adventure inside of you. And you will see this in a very specific way.

So, you will start to create like a lot of articles and then, you might follow the niche down advice that you already hear(d)… or you can go for the long and fun way of sharing everything you know about all of the topics that you know for —at least— a year, and then you will start to pay attention to all of your stats.

And the most weird, fun, casual, kind of knowledge that you didn’t even had… that one specific topic will be the one that you audience will need the most.

Just hang in there, pay attention to your analytics, stay vigilant to your numbers, understand what your audience is telling you. If you don’t get comments, if you don’t get subscribers, if you don’t get readers, read your analytics because they are telling you something with their actions.

Those actions can be read in your stats, and when you learn to read your stats, you will find that the least possible kind of topic that you were thinking about to go full in, will be the one that your audience chooses.

That is everything from me. These are the five things that Blogging teaches you or at least what Blogging has taught me in these thirteen years of blogging. I really hope that this article helps you and I hope that God allows us to see each other very very soon. Ciao!

The Importance of Being The Only One Writing.

Today I’m going to share the importance of being the only one writing. I have 7 ideas of why it is very important to be the only one writing and I really think that these will help you in your blogging career, your writing career, or in your journaling hobby at least.

The importance of being the only one writing.

Sunscreen / Shoes / Bandage / Shorts / Discus

Anthropology Perspective.

I want you to think if you ever went to a museum and then you were fascinated about the things you saw.

When I went to the Ceren Jewel, I had the opportunity of seeing these constructions, I saw these little pots and benches. I just could imagine on what type of things, families, stories, gatherings, reunions happened there.

And the real thing is that even experts can only imagine what happened there. But nobody has the exact data on what happened. Anthropologists just can make these assumptions of what happened in those places.

But the truth is if we only had one piece of paper, or one drawing, or one word that could explain something, we would have a lot of more depth of what happened there and what antique civilizations were doing and how their normal days actually affected us in our own evolution.

Just one word, just one advice, just one shortcut.

Just one word (could) have a lot of meaning.

For example, in 100 years, my family will see this video or a strange group of people will find my house and maybe find this pillow and know exactly that this was the room of a woman because that word says Darling over there.

The importance of being the only one writing is to be able to give clues, not just to your current audience but also to the future one.

Just imagine what one word could do for you or could do for your future audience. Just imagine what one word could do for us if those people in our old civilizations wrote something.

We could only imagine how they were living but we could not know exactly what they were talking about or how they became this kind of big civilizations, or why they went extinct, or why they left, if there is something that is going to happen in our lands, anything.

We just needed one paper, we just needed one word, we just needed one advice from them. And we don’t have them. We just can throw lines here and there and just imagine what did happen there.

The good thing, or at least one of the things that I’m really proud of of the Ceren Jewel: that construction means that there were normal people, like you and I, in antique civilizations.

I mean, most of the time we see those amazing temples and castles and stuff were all the kings of antique civilizations used to live, but thanks to the Ceren Jewel now I have this evidence that someone like me also lived back there.

Someone normal, someone that has to cook their meal every day, someone that has to take a bath every day, work every day, write every day, study every day just to be able to live. And that’s amazing but I would really love if I had a little more of depth of that knowledge.

And you can be that normal person writing right now to give future evidence to your own audience.

I mean, I’m going a little way there talking about like old civilizations but what if you could be that normal person that writes something normal and meaningful to give some kind of clue to the future people of what were some things that you thought, and you developed, and you created, and you analyzed to make your life better, to make your normal life better.

And that is the first importance of being the only one writing.

I don’t want to left that way of thinking there. I want you to think about this in a really deep way.

Direct connection perspective.

If you were the only one writing, you are a direct connection to a different era. And I’m not just creating this stuff, I’m actually sharing data here.

A few days ago, I saw a recipe that a 90 year old woman got from somebody when she was 9. And that person that shared the recipe with her had like 75 years old when she shared the recipe. That means that her sharing that recipe today is a direct connection to the 1860s. Just think about that.

And she had the opportunity of having that recipe shared directly to her. But you have the opportunity in this era to share a lot of knowledge in an indirect form.

What that means? It means that this article will reach a lot of people that I don’t even know in person. They might have now the courage to be the only one writing and start documenting their lives to the future people.

It’s not just about being the only one writing, it’s about being a direct connection between time.

Time travel perspective.

If you were excited about time traveling, the best way to time travel right now is to write. Write right now, document your life, encapsule those anecdotes, that knowledge, those advices, those shortcuts, write them, publish them and help the future civilizations.

Necklace / Shirt / Pants / Sandals

Gift perspective.

When you are the only one writing, you have more than just an opportunity. You are giving knowledge, time, dedication, love to your current civilization, your current audience and to your future civilization, (your future audience).

When you are the only one writing, it’s not just a responsibility, it’s an act of love, it’s an act of giving away, it’s a gift that you are giving. You are giving your time to register your present, to document it and to share it with the people that you have around, with the people that is not around but it’s connected to you through the Internet. But you are also giving away your knowledge to the people that isn’t even born yet.

You don’t know who you are writing for.

Even though when marketers say that you have to imagine who is your person and stuff. But the truth is you don’t know who is on the other side of the screen. You don’t really know who are you giving this gift of knowledge, who are you giving this advice, who are you giving this shortcut. And you don’t even know how much they needed to know from you.

The importance of being the only one writing is that you have the responsibility, the privilege, and a gift in your hands to give away, to help another life. Writing or sharing knowledge in any way, type or form, is a gift to change someone’s life.

And maybe this person is in need to know what you know. Maybe this person doesn’t have the right parents, the right friends, the right counselors. But they have Internet and they have you. And you somehow appeared on their screen.

Don’t waste that opportunity and give away your knowledge, give away that advice. Help them. Share that. That is the importance of being the only one writing.

Sunscreen

Honor perspective.

Because when you are the only one writing, believe it or not, you are part of the 1%. For every writer, there are 100 readers. That means if 100 people saw something, only 1 is going to write about it.

And what happens if you decide not to write about it? If you don’t register what happened, maybe nobody would know ever what happened. And maybe you had the answer, and maybe you knew how to solve it.

But if you decide not to write, now nobody will know how to solve it if that ever happens in another side of the world. If you decide not to write, 100 people will not know the knowledge that you have.

Loneliness perspective.

Whenever you felt the most lost in life, what did you need? You needed knowledge. You needed to know what was going on. Just imagine if you decided to write, how many people you would help, how many people would feel less lost.

That is the importance of being the only one writing. Remember, it is not just a responsibility, it is a gift, it is a privilege, it is a great honor to be in the place of the people who is helping. Because it means that you are in a better life position that it is in your hands to be able to help other people, whether is with knowledge, advice, tricks, shortcuts, etcetera.

Don’t waste that type of privilege that you have right now. That is the importance of being the only one writing. You are helping somebody and you don’t even know it.

These people might be connected to you and you don’t even know where they are, and you don’t even realized that they’re there, but the truth is thanks to you they are not alone. Because you helped them. You helped. You shared your knowledge, you tried to give away solutions, you tried to share shortcuts, so they are not alone anymore.

But guess what? You are not alone either.

It happened to me a few days ago, that I was trying to write my TinyLetter and I thought that who’s writing a TinyLetter anymore!? I mean, why should I do that? I already have a newsletter where I share all my new blogposts. I have a podcast, I have a blog, I have this Twitter, I have this Instagram, I have almost every social media there is… so, why should I write my TinyLetter?

I just felt like I wanted to but I didn’t have like a really good reason. I started to look up on Twitter in the Search Bar for “TinyLetter” to see if anybody was writing about a TinyLetter. And I saw that there were a lot of people still writing TinyLetters.

And then I realized: hey, I’m not the only one writing a Tinyletter! I’m not alone. If I feel like writing a TinyLetter, I should just do it, I should just write, because I want to. So, I did, and it was amazing, and I guess I’ll be doing that every month.

If you want to subscribe to my TinyLetter where I share all the milestones and all the strategies that I did to get those milestones subscribe here because it’s going to be a free monthly edition of a TinyLetter.

As a writer, it is a lonely kind of profession, it is a lonely type of work, but it’s worth it. And remember, just because no one is in your room when you are sharing your knowledge, when you are documenting everything you know, doesn’t mean that you are alone.

We are a lot of people trying to share everything that we know in our bedrooms, in our living rooms, in our loneliness, so don’t feel lonely. Because even though we are not with you, we’re all in this together, we’re all writing alone and we are just waiting to read somebody’s post to see how it can help us. Remember that always.

Blouse / Lipstick

Teaching perspective.

And when you feel that you are too alone, remember that you are part of the 1% that is sharing knowledge. Just remember your teachers.

When your classrooms were full, there was one person that knew it all.

I don’t know if you have thought about this but actually teachers get paid to learn. Even though we are used to see them in full classrooms, the truth is that they had to study alone to learn what they knew to then, come back to teach us.

It is that way for us but we are not in the middle of a classroom, we are in the middle of our bedrooms with our ring light in the front of us.

If they had a lot of alone time to be that type of smart people, then we also are going to spend a lot of alone time to be able to share our knowledge in a compact, digestible way. Don’t be afraid. Even though you are “alone” in your craft, you are not alone.

There are several people doing the exact same activity than you and you can just search for them on Twitter to realize that everybody is writing a book, everybody is writing a new blogpost, a new TinyLetter… just go ahead and search it. That way you might feel less lonely in your craft.

But if you ever, if you ever feel lonely, just remember that this tree will give its fruits in the future. You are sharing knowledge today, but the real fruits will be seen in the future. You are giving shortcuts today, but the real applications will be seen in the future. It’s just a matter of patience on your end to see it in the concrete world.

Don’t be discouraged, because all of these things are the importance of being the only one writing.

Love perspective.

And the last but not least thing to think about being the only one writing is that fruits that I was talking about might be even your closest family. You have no idea how you are helping them in the future.

You are actually giving shortcuts to the people you love the most. You are helping them to be able to be a better version of themselves just by sharing your mistakes, your knowledge, your shortcuts, your advice.

You are making this world a little bit better and that is the true importance of being the only one writing. Because… what are we looking for? We are looking for pieces that are published (to answer our doubts), we are looking for books, we are looking for knowledge, we are looking for videos, we are looking for podcasts.

We eager knowledge. We just don’t do it like before. We just don’t want it to be news. We just don’t want it to be movies…

We want normal people, like in the antique civilizations, to feel like a normal person is sharing that advice with us because that advice will actually work for normal people. And that’s what we want.

Imagine just how stronger your message will be if that people that is going to receive your knowledge is actually your future family. It will be a greater message for them because they are sure that the person that is giving away this knowledge is not just a normal person, is a person like them, with the same DNA.

Now they have a path to follow to solve their issues and to be a better version of themselves and make this world a little bit better.

And that is the true importance of being the only one writing.

I hope this article helps you and I hope that God allows us to see each other very very soon. Ciao!

How to clean my blog to find what works.

Keep reading to learn how to clean your blog to find what works. These clean ups are some blogging tips for beginners that actually work because they help you to understand your market, find your niche, clean your blog for SEO purposes and triple down your efforts on the content that provides value to your audience.

How to clean my blog to find what works.

Today I’m going to share with you how to clean your blog to find what works, to understand your market, to find your niche, and to send a better message to the search engines.

1. Clean your less visited posts to understand your market.

The first things that I like to clean are my posts. To clean the posts with 10% of visits (if you have 700 subscribers, clean the posts with less than 70 visits in a year), as the market has spoken, I like to go on a yearly basis, so I go to the Years tab. Then, WordPress will automatically fix that (graph) view for me and (show all my stats) yearly.

I’m going to click on the year (that I want to clean), and then I’m going to go to the Post & Pages (section). The Post & Pages will show me every post that has been visited during all the year that I chose (in my case, I clicked on 2020), whether that post was published on that year or before.

The blue rectangles tell me that this post was published on the year that I chose. This is how I know. Since (the post with the blue rectangle) is above 72 (visits during all 2020), I’m going to leave that.

And this (other example with less than 72 visits) is the post that hasn’t get any views. So, I’m going to click on View. And proceed to do the clean up.

On the lower right corner, click on the Edit button. Click on Status & Visibility on the upper right corner. Then click Public and set your post to private and that’s how you will start to understand what your audience wants and needs from you.

Try to triple down your efforts on the things that work on your blog (the posts that survived the cleanse!).

This is the first clean up that you will need to do. The first clean up will help you to understand what the market is saying to you.

Advertisements

2. Clean your categories with 0 posts to find your niche.

The second clean up will help you to find your niche. The second clean up is about the categories. So, we’re going to go under Posts in your menu that is on the left (in our WordPress dashboard) and then you will click on Categories.

Here you will find the categories.

The categories are only going to count the public articles. Since you already hid the post that were not getting traction, some categories might be at zero. This is a great message for you that you should stop writing about those specific categories with zero public posts and pay attention to the categories that survived to find your niche.

Sunscreen / Moisturizer

3. Clean your tags with 0 posts for SEO purposes.

The last but not least way that I clean up my blog to find what works is that I go to the Tags section.

And (since) we already hide the posts that were not getting traction, and we already deleted the categories that didn’t have any post so we could find our niche, now is our time to clean our tags for SEO purposes.

So, we are going to do the same kind of process that we did back there (in) the categories, and we are going to delete everything (that has zero posts) here.

Advertisements

Summary of the clean ups.

Remember:

  1. Posts are cleaned because your market has spoken.
  2. Categories are cleaned so you can find a niche.
  3. Tags are cleaned for SEO purposes.

Why you need to clean up your blog.

This clean up is super important specially if you have a WordPress blog. Why? Because WordPress creates a new directory or page for everything. So, if you have a kind of page that is not moving or is not receiving visits… this kind of activity doesn’t send a well message to the search engines. Therefore, it won’t be pushing your content and it won’t get you any more visitors or subscribers. And your work will be in vain.

So, with this clean up we want to avoid that. We want to understand our data. We want to understand our audience. And we want to create a future plan of publishing content in our blogs.

Sunscreen / Moisturizer / Sunglasses

How frequently should you clean up your blog.

If you have never cleaned your blog, this might be the best time to do it. Don’t sweat if you haven’t even imagined about doing this for the last few months. I only do this clean up once in a year.

Who needs to clean up their blog.

To proceed to this clean up of your blog, you also have to have the right mindset.

This clean up is well suited for you if you have a business mindset. This means that you are writing a blog to create some kind of income, some kind of lifestyle, some kind of business, then this clean up is for you.

But if you are writing your blog in terms of legacy, it is best for you to not hide your posts, to not delete them, (to not make them private), to not (delete) the categories, and to not delete the tags. Because you don’t care about what is happening right now, you care about the future.

And also, if you have a hobby mindset, you don’t actually make this clean up because you don’t care about numbers, don’t care about data. You enjoy so much the art of creating and publishing a post that that creates a (sense of) fulfillment for you and that’s it. So you don’t have to proceed to do this clean up.

This clean up is only adviced for people that have this business mindset in their blogging efforts.

That’s everything that I have for you today. I hope that you liked this article. And I hope that God allows us to see each other very very soon. Bye!

  3. Y hacer mi cumbrera.
  4. Luego de poner mis cumbreras, empiezo a polinear.

  3. Empezamos a colocar lámina.
